selected quotes
“It’s like he digested all the music of the sixties just like those musicians listened to the progenitors and kept the flame a-burnin’… This guy has a place in the firmament.”
- Bob Lefsetz, Lefsetz Letter
“Displays his guitar prowess but within the borders of melodies and lyrics that push the boundaries of blues/rock. Searing guitar work, and persuasive songwriting.”
- American Songwriter
“Instead of an artist who is attempting to straddle multiple musical lanes, mastering none, Johanson has done the opposite – beautifully unifying the styles by focusing on the emotional and human center of each genre.“
- American Blues Scene
“Eric, in my opinion, is one of the most soulful guitarists I’ve ever played with. He’s a young man but plays with old soul.”
- Cyril Neville, (The Neville Brothers, The Meters)

BIO
Eric Johanson stands at the forefront of modern blues with a sound that fuses deep groove, raw guitar fire, and a forward-leaning rock edge. His Ruf Records debut, The Deep and the Dirty, surged to #1 on the Billboard Blues Charts, marking a breakout moment that cemented Johanson as one of the genre’s most vital new voices. Leading a high-octane power trio, he performed in over 100 cities across 10 countries in 2024 alone. In 2025, Johanson followed with another Top 10 Billboard release (Live In Mississippi), extensive U.S. touring, and sold-out headline shows across Europe, while his reputation for electrifying live performances and word-of-mouth buzz continues to fuel rapid audience growth. From Grammy-nominated collaborations with Big Chief Monk Boudreaux, to direct support for artists like The Record Company, Samantha Fish, Tab Benoit, Anders Osborne, and North Mississippi Allstars, Johanson’s work has earned growing recognition from peers and critics alike. With a new studio album slated for 2026, Johanson continues to push modern blues into bold, unfiltered territory.
Born and raised in Louisiana, Johanson’s roots run deep in the blues and rock traditions. His early years were spent performing at local venues and leading underground rock bands, developing a sound that blended the heaviness of rock with the emotional depth of blues. After a stint living overseas and further refining his approach, he returned to New Orleans and quickly became a sought-after guitarist, known for his ability to merge Southern roots with a forward-thinking edge.
His breakout moment came when blues luminary Tab Benoit signed him to Whiskey Bayou Records and produced Johanson’s debut solo album, Burn It Down (2017). The album introduced him as a serious guitarist with an ear for strong songwriting, leading to a two-year tour with Benoit himself playing drums in Johanson’s band during his opening sets. From there, his sound evolved further, catching the attention of Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars), who produced Johanson’s second album, Below Sea Level (2020). That record marked a creative shift—darker, heavier, and more introspective—solidifying his identity as an artist willing to push boundaries rather than stay confined to a single genre.
For The Deep and the Dirty, Johanson teamed up with producer Jesse Dayton, crafting what many critics call his most powerful work yet. The album fuses raw, high-energy guitar playing with gripping, well-crafted songwriting, balancing a deep respect for tradition with a modern, hard-hitting edge. Over the past few years, he has toured extensively, both as a headliner and supporting artists such as Samantha Fish, North Mississippi Allstars, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, The Record Company, Walter Trout, and more. His live performances are known for their intensity, passionate vocals, and dynamic guitar work—pushing the limits of what modern blues-rock can be without losing its soul.
With a growing international following and a relentless drive to create, Eric Johanson isn’t just a standout guitarist—he’s an artist carving out his own lane, redefining the space between rock, blues, and everything in between.
